Test Bay Application Engineer/ Technician

Location: Markham (Onsite)

Test Bay Application Engineer/ Technician is responsible for programming, testing and commissioning of protection and control Panels for Generator Protection, Generator Excitation, Transformer Protection, Feeder Protection, Bus Protection and Line Protection System.

The Test Bay Engineer is Reporting to Engineering Manager/assigned Team Leader

She/he defines designs and supports testing of Protection relays, in close collaboration with Operations leader and Project Management Leader.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Analyzing customer applications/specifications and understanding the design of protection and control panel, single line diagram, schematic diagram, logic diagram, control diagram and Bill of Materials, engineering instruction, wiring drawing, wire list, wire tags to fulfill user specifications and requirements.
  • Prepare test plans customized to ensure that multi function protection relays behave the way they are supposed to do in order to protect the power system installed at.
  • Create relays setting files based on logic diagrams and setting included in coordination and protection study reports.
  • Upload setting files and set up communication including IEC 61850.
  • Execute test plans using secondary injection tests and simulate complex control schemes such as Transfer schemes, Synchronizing schemes and Auto-restoration schemes based on logic diagrams
  • Take full responsibility to assigned projects with minor support from Senior Lead Application Engineer
  • Testing of customized Protection and Control solutions both in house and at customer installations
  • Provide field support up to and including commissioning of new applications.
  • Provide training/peer check/design support to other members of the team.

 

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • University degree or College diploma in Electrical Engineering
  • 3-5 years’ working experience in relay testing and creation of setting files for Multi-Function Relays
  • Strong knowledge of power systems, protection schemes and communication applications
  • Experience in creation of test procedure and maintenance procedure related to factory and site testing and commissioning protection panel.
  • Experience in programming the GE Multilin family of relays, specifically the UR Family
  • Excellent understanding of theoretical bases for all major protection principles including Distance, Line Differential, Transformer Differential, Bus, Feeder, Generator and Large Motor protection.
  • Demonstrated team player, initiative to take the lead and mentoring of other members of the team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work in a multicultural environment.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience in turn-key Protection and Control projects
  • Demonstrated record in developing protection and control applications
  • Working knowledge of major test sets and short-circuit / setting coordination software
  • Working knowledge of RTDS, ASPEN, EMTP, SKM,ETAP and MATLAB
  • Familiarity with standard work and documentation procedures of electrical utilities
  • Interdisciplinary experience including metering, communications, substation automation and integration
  • Knowledge and experience with GE Digital Energy and 3rd Party Protection Relay products
  • Lean/6 Sigma Green belt or Black belt certification preferred
  • P.Eng Certified is an asset
